Obesity is defined as a body mass index of 30 or greater. Childhood obesity statistics in America show that one of 7 low-income, preschool-aged children is obese. Obesity statistics for children ages two and four, that come from low-income families increase from 12.4 percent in 1998 to 14.5 percent in 2003, but increased only to 14.6 percent in 2008.
Childhood obesity is a serious health concern for children and adolescents. Studies that were preformed during, 2003 - 2004 have shown an increase from 6.5% to 18.8%; for those aged 6 - 11 years of age. For those children ages 12 - 19 years of age there was an increase from 5.0% to 17.4%. Obesity statistics in America has become an alarming problem. One that we as a nation should be very concerned about. There are serious health concerns when it comes to childhood obesity such as, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
According to the CDC and prevention, 16% of American children (over 8 million) between the ages of 6 - 9 are overweight or obese. These statistics has tripled since the 1980's. Childhood obesity among preschool children and adolescents has more than doubled. Adolescents who are overweight increase their chances of becoming overweight or obese adults by 70% and this is a problem that all parents should be concerned about.
Childhood obesity has become an epidemic in this country, and not only do parents play a role in eliminating this problem. This is a problem that our schools should play a role in as well as the communities that we live in, and most of all our healthcare systems. If everyone pull together to fight against this problem, we could reverse the statistics as a nation.
